Local SEO Checklist for Australian Trade & Service Businesses

TL;DR — Tick off these nine tasks and you’ll cover 90 % of what actually moves the needle in Google’s Map Pack for tradies, builders and other service pros.

1  Claim or verify your Google Business Profile

Make sure you’ve got owner access via business.google.com and your ABN matches the business name on the listing.

2  Pick a laser-specific primary category

Builders love “Construction company”, but “Excavating contractor” ranks faster if that’s the money service. Check top competitors’ categories with the free GMBspy Chrome extension.

3  Write a keyword-rich business description

150–200 words; weave in suburb + service (“Wollongong vacuum excavation specialists”) without stuffing.

4  Add Services with pricing (even if it’s “Varies”)

Each one is a hidden ranking signal. Keep names search-friendly: “Potholing services”, not “Soft dig”.

5  Geo-tag at least 10 fresh photos

Shoot on-site, rename files “vacuum-excavation-wollongong.jpg”, upload via the Photos tab. Consistent posts every fortnight keep engagement up.

6  Use a UTM-tagged website link

?utm_source=googlebiz&utm_medium=profile lets GA4 tell you exactly how many clicks turned into enquiries.

7  Check NAP consistency across major Aussie directories

TrueLocal, Yellow Pages, Hipages, Oneflare, Facebook. Same spelling, same phone, no PO Box mix-ups.

8  Request (and reply to) reviews with location + service keywords

“Thanks Sam for the quick potholing job in Shellharbour” → Google reads it, rewards you.

9  Speed matters—fix Core Web Vitals

Slow mobile pages = higher bounce → lower “prominence” in local ranking. Aim for LCP ≤ 2.5 s and INP ≤ 200 ms.

Putting it all together

Set a calendar reminder: Day 1 do tasks 1–4, Day 2 upload photos & UTM link, Week 2 send the first review request. Re-run your stats in GBP Insights after 30 days—calls and website clicks should trend up.
